What Else Is Important to Me?

Hello! My name is Alex Procenko, (but my students usually call me Miss P). This year I started work as a secondary school occasional teacher and also teaching Grade 9 and 10 Science at the National Ski Academy in Collingwood! I grew up in Wasaga Beach, in the beautiful Georgian Triangle area. I am a double Western University graduate, obtaining my Bachelor of Science in 2013 and my Bachelor of Education (I/S General Science and Biology, STEM cohort) in 2017. I've recently completed the Intermediate Math ABQ and Spec Ed Part 1.

My Path to Teaching

I didn't dream about being a teacher when I was little; my career aspirations changed over the years as I discovered more and more interests. My mom says my first aspiration was to be a marine biologist, then I wanted to be a Disney animator, I wanted to be an author, I wanted to be a doctor. I taught piano to young children in high school, then worked as a pharmacy assistant at Shoppers Drug Mart for a long time, I created commissioned artworks for people, and now I run a business performing micropigmentation services.

When I finished my undergrad I had some serious self-reflection to do. What was I going to do with my life? In all the experiences I had had so far, there wasn't one that excited me enough that I could envision making a career out of it. It was actually my mom who suggested teaching to me. I initially brushed it off; I had never said to myself "I want to be a teacher", but the more I thought about it, the more excited I was by the idea. I have always loved explaining new and interesting things to others and had been a teacher of sorts to my three younger siblings for years as I helped them all with different subjects throughout elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school. I enjoy the challenge of learning a new skill, or learning about a new subject. The one common thread that I realized existed among all my life experiences is my love of learning.

Fast forward to my impending graduation and I am so excited that I have found my calling! I know it is cliche to say, but teaching really is such a rewarding experience. Being responsible for preparing young people for the world is no easy feat, but I love being a part of the thrill of learning.

Learning to be a teaching has been the hardest, but most rewarding adventure I have embarked on so far. My first practicum teacher told me something that I hold near and dear to my heart; during my first week of teaching (ever) she said "I'm going to tell you something that my first practicum teacher told me; 'Some people are born teachers, and others need to learn. You are a born teacher'."

I want to inspire and ready my students to be able to follow their dreams.

What Do I Want To Teach?

I enjoyed every subject as a student, and would love to be able to teach every subject! However, I do not have enough university degrees to be able to teach everything. On paper, I am qualified to teach Intermediate/Senior General Science and Biology with a specialization in STEM (the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education). I have recently become qualified to teach Intermediate Math as well. I am hoping that as a Math teacher I will be able to teach my students to if not love Math, to at least not hate it! I am currently enrolled in the AQ/ABQ courses for Spec Ed Part 1, Senior Social Sciences, and Intermediate First Nations, Métis & Inuit Studies, finishing in April 2018. Science, Social Science, and Art were my favourite subjects in school, so I love being in a position to  expand the minds of young people to the fascinating world of how things work and why they are the way they are. Opportunities in my STEM program have given me insight into how impactful the integration of engineering and technology into education can be. Give students the opportunity and tools to make and create, and the sky is the limit to what they can accomplish.

For a sample of teaching materials I have created, take a look through the Science and Coding tabs in the main menu.

I've also written more about my philosophy of education in a blog post. Read it here.

About Me

I am a voracious reader. The genres of fiction, historical fiction and fantasy are my favourite. I love traveling, especially to places with a lot of history; I hope to visit a new place every year! I have also continued to play piano and draw and paint since I was a little girl.

I hope you enjoy this website, which is dedicated to showcasing all that I am and hope to become as a teacher!
